You want them to heat up with the oven. Then start preheating the oven to 425 degrees. But then i started noticing a lot of comments on those sharpie mug photos most of them complaining that while these darling little mugs are indeed the easiest craft ever the marker is not actually wash resistant when applied to ceramic. Turn the oven to 400 degrees and set a timer for 40 minutes.

Sharpie markers both oil based and regular are not designed to be baked. Once 24 hours has passed place them in a cold oven this is important. Bake the mug in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 f. Turn off the oven. Set the temperature to 325 degrees and let the oven warm to that temperature with the dish inside leave for 35 minutes. Some other sharpie mug methods say 350 or 375 but the hotter the oven the more the original white glaze will melt and allow your sharpie paint to set in so i like to bake my mugs at 425.

You can use regular dish soap and warm water to clean. Heat the mug in the oven for 20 30 minutes. Do not put in the dishwasher unless you seal them. Remember to place the mug in the oven before it heats up and leave it in until the oven cools completely so there won t be any cracks.

Allow the piece to cool completely in the oven. After the 30 minutes i turned the oven off but left the plates inside to cool in the oven leaving them there for several hours. After 24 hours put your mugs in a cold oven on a cookie sheet. By using oil based sharpie markers and baking them in the oven you should be able to gently hand wash your mug without the paint washing away.

Once they re cool they re ready to use. Some say that some of the colors change when baked some say that they don t stand up to dishwasher washing or handwashing even and some say that the paint chips off the mugs after a couple uses. After the 40 minutes is up turn the oven off and leave the cups to cool with the oven. It will take about half an hour in the oven for the ceramic to hold the marker.

Stand the mug on a flat baking sheet and place it into the heated oven. When the plates were completely cooled we all had a good laugh as we were pulling them out of the oven.
